Great Covered Patio Design Ideas

With few exceptions, you will find that the best covered patios are the ones that employ the best designs.  This is true with all home decorating, indoors or out.  The reason is that when you have good plans, you can be reasonably sure that the final product will be a better use of space than something that is more of an afterthought.  You can think of your covered patio designs as being like an outdoor room of your home.

Like with any room, there are walls, a floor and a ceiling.  Similarly, your outdoor patio has these same features. The only difference with the outdoor space is that your ‘walls’ are made with more temporary accessories like patio shades or curtains.  These can provide both shade and privacy, as well as add a nice decorative element to your patio space.

Much like the walls of your patio room, your floor needs to be something that can withstand the outdoor environment.  For this reason, a poured concrete slab or patio pavers are often used.  You an also utilize any number of bricks or flagstone as well for a more refined look.  The bricks come in a variety of shades and colors so you can have something that blends in well with your outdoor landscape.

Any of these materials will work quite well for your ‘floor’.  In fact, there are a range of stained and stamped concrete designs that can accent a patio nicely.  This can combine the durability and ease of laying of concrete with the look and design of a more natural material.  There are various natural or geometric patterns from which you can choose.

Moving up to the ceiling of your outdoor room, we’ll call that the roof of your patio.  This can be more of an open style or be something that has features more similar to a traditional roof of a home.  This is another one of those features that your covered patio ideas will help create.

If you are looking for a more protected and sheltered patio space, one where you will be utilizing various outdoor audio-visual equipment or appliances, a fully covered space makes more sense.  If your idea of a great patio experience is having an outdoor fire pit and sitting around a fire, then an open roof is more than just a nice feature, it is imperative as eliminating a fire hazard.  However you wish to decorate your outdoor patio room will be determined by your use as well.

If you are more of a host and entertainer, then you may have a patio filled with lounging furniture and cocktail tables.  If you are more of a sun worshipper, your chairs will reflect your desire to jump out of the pool and into a chair to catch some rays and an afternoon nap.  What ever type of patio enthusiast you are, you will surely be able to find many covered patio design ideas online to help you create your perfect space.
