Let a Porch Awning Add Functionality and Style

Porch awnings can add a lot of functionality and style to your home exterior areas.  They come in an unlimited variety of materials, patterns and options.  The benefits can far outweigh the cons.  An awning can transform your patio or porch into a usable space you will enjoy for years to come.

Thinking about the benefits of having an outdoor awning it becomes quickly apparent how useful these are.  They provide shelter from the sun, rain and other elements.  This protection allows your family to enjoy this space even under less than perfect conditions.  It has been scientifically proven that on average it is twenty degrees color underneath an awning or other cover than sitting out in the direct sun.  With the cover in place you can sit out on the lawn in the summer without roasting in the heat or getting sunburned.  Family gatherings and neighborhood cookouts become so much more enjoyable.

There are a lot of different types of porch awnings.  You can install permanent ones made of wood, aluminum and other materials.  Cloth is also a favored material.  The cloth awnings can be permanent or retractable.  They can be ceiling, roof or wall mounted.  You can even purchase remote controls for the ultimate in ease and functionality.

Prices vary as widely as accessories.  Prices start around one thousand dollars for a retractable porch awning with no accessories and goes up from there.  Material choice, mountings, motorized or manual all these options are figured into the price.  Self installation versus professional installation also greatly affects the price.

As with all things there are some cons.  Wind and snow can be a major enemy. It is very important to store away retractable awnings during bad weather to prevent damage.  Permanent structures need to be pitched so that rain and snow do not collect and pool on them.  Many permanent awnings can be folded down during off seasons.  Eventually fabrics, woods and even aluminum covers will need upkeep and replacement due to fading and wear.  Look for warranties and years of predicted wear when choosing materials.

You can buy awnings in a vast number of places.  As always the internet is a great place to research and or purchase your awning.  This is especially true if you are going to install it yourself.  You can also use the internet to find reputable companies to design and install the awning for you.  Look around locally too.  Major do it yourself retailers can offer kits and individual pieces for those comfortable with self installation.  They can also provide you with a list of installers.  Local companies often offer competitive pricing as well.  So do your homework and compare options and pricing.
