Pergola Design Options to Consider

A pergola is an outdoor structure that covers, and protects an area in your front, or backyard. It will add depth and beauty to your home, and will increase the value of your property. There are different types of structures, and pergola design options to choose from. You can build a patio cover, pavilion, gazebo, arbor, or a pergola. Materials vary, and can include wood, steel, vinyl or PVC.

A patio cover can be permanent or temporary. It will provide shade in the warmer months and is a great place to gather with friends, and family. They are usually built on a raised platform, or over a concrete base.

If you want a functional outdoor space that includes a kitchen, you could build a pavilion. This is an outdoor room that has a roof and open sides. The roof protects you from the elements, and provides cover for your furniture, and appliances. You can also attach heavy clear plastic blinds that act as protective walls, for adverse weather conditions. These can be rolled up or down just like blinds.

Gazebos are usually the focal point of a decorative area. You can erect them in gardens, or in the pool area. Lattice is popular, but some people like to leave the walls open. Your local park probably has a gazebo that houses local bands in the summertime.

One of the most popular pergola designs features open beams, and is usually set in a garden. It supports plants and is referred to as an arbor. Most of them are designed to fit with the theme of your outdoor setting. Lavish homes have several arbors that show off beautifully landscaped areas.

A pergola is typically a freestanding or attached structure that usually has cross beams at the top, although some are completely covered. Columns are used to support the pergola. You can train ivy to grow on the lattice side walls, which will give you more shade. If you want an outdoor dining area for parties and family gatherings, a pergola is perfect.

Whatever patio cover designs you decide on, it is important to do your research. Read reviews to find out what other people have to say about pergola design options. Window shop, and take a look at what is available, and what will work the best in your outdoor area. If you live somewhere that has harsh winters, it is important to build something that can withstand extreme conditions.
