Using Solar Pool Covers
Using solar pool covers offers homeowners many advantages, from keeping their pool cleaner to saving money. Keeping a pool warm and clean can be a daunting task at certain times of the year. Heating pools during the winter months can really rack up energy costs. Regular pool covers will trap heat, but solar pool covers collect heat from the sun and transfer the energy to the pool water. Solar pool covers are also called bubble covers and they are a less expensive alternative to insulated vinyl covers.
Besides reducing the energy bill, solar covers offer several additional benefits. They conserve water evaporation by about 30% and help to maintain the water’s chemical composition. This may save on pool chemicals, which can be costly. In addition, they reduce cleaning time and energy by keeping out flying debris of dirt, grass and leaves.
Reduce pool-heating bills by as much as 70% with a solar cover. They increase the warmth of the pool by locking in the heat, saving you from having to heat with power. During the day, the cover absorbs heat from direct sunlight and can result in a temperature increase of about 15 degrees.
They are made of thick vinyl, polypropylene or UV-stabilized polyethylene. This type of swimming pool cover is very durable, resists weathering, deterioration and usually last for many years. They are made of plastic materials with a bubble pattern that is resistant to ultraviolet rays. When the water in the pool is retaining more heat, the heater does not run as much and operates with more efficiency.
Solar pool covers fit both inground pools and pools above the ground. You can choose from styles that roll by hand with a reel, a motorized anchored style or free-floating types. The average homeowner may need to replace the cover every few years, because of UV ray deterioration.
